Referring to the blaze that erupted at a multi-storey building located at Karachi's I.I Chundrigar Road, Waseem Akhtar said that fire-fighter department doesn't have latest machinery due to lack of funds. He said that workers rescued the stranded people by risking their own lives. "We have written several letters to the government officials, informing them about the issue of resources but no step has been taken in this regard so far," he added.
Meanwhile, Chief Fire Officer Tehseen Ahmed revealed that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has three snorkels among which only one is functional which is not enough to extinguish the fire at 18th floor. He said the workers don't have proper uniform, helmets and other safety equipments. On the other hand, the massive fire that broke out at 15th floor of the building has intensified to 18th floor. Fire-fighters said that they are facing immense difficulties in controlling the inferno due to suffocation and heat but they are struggling hard to extinguish it with water pipes.
They said that the blaze has badly damaged various offices located in the building. On December 8, as many as 12 people were killed and more than 110 injured in Shahrah-e-Faisal's private hotel blaze. Hotel management said that the fire broke out at 3am in the kitchen located in basement and intensified, engulfing a major part of the hotel.
